Institutional Profile

Driving Systemic Restoration in Sierra Leone.

WAfEJD is a community-based organization dedicated to bridging the critical gap between resource extraction and environmental human rights in the Kono District.

The Mandate

Empowering the Custodians
of the Land.

Established in 2018, WAfEJD functions as a catalyst for sustainable governance in Sierra Leone’s mining corridors.

We recognize that environmental degradation is not merely a physical phenomenon, but a socio-economic crisis that disproportionately impacts women and children. Our approach integrates Gender-Responsive Advocacy with climate resilience to ensure that land wealth benefits the people.

As a registered CBO, WAfEJD serves as a strategic bridge between local stakeholders and policy makers, translating community needs into actionable development programs.

Legal Literacy

Equipping women with knowledge of constitutional rights regarding land ownership.

Climate Advocacy

Advocating for policy shifts that hold mining entities accountable for reclamation.

Regional Context

The Legacy of
Extraction.

For decades, the Kono District has been synonymous with mineral wealth, yet the extraction of diamonds has left a legacy of environmental scars.

Soil degradation and water contamination have disrupted traditional livelihoods. This ecological crisis is compounded by social inequities, where women are often excluded from resource benefits.

WAfEJD was born to address this imbalance, transforming Kono into a model of restorative justice.
